Ramseur, NC

Ramseur is a Randolph County town on the Deep River, with 1,774 residents in the 2020 census and a name tied to one of the Civil War's most complicated memories. The town took the surname of Stephen Dodson Ramseur, a Confederate major general, in 1889. That naming sits beside an older industrial story: mills on the Deep River turned waterpower into work, and the community grew around the people and buildings that followed.

Deep River Mills began in 1850 and became Columbia Manufacturing Company in 1879. The mill village eventually closed in January 1963, but the brick complex's place in town history remained strong enough for the Deep River-Columbia Manufacturing Company to join the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. Eastern Randolph High School gives Ramseur a current school-centered presence, while the river keeps the older geography in view. The town's character comes from that overlap: a name from the nineteenth-century military past, a manufacturing landscape built along moving water, and a present-day Randolph County community still organized around school, road, and river.
