Ramsey, IL

Ramsey is a Fayette County village with 911 people at the 2020 census. U.S. Route 51 passes through the center, leading 17 miles north to Pana and 13 miles south to Vandalia, the county seat. The village's name honors Alexander Ramsey, the second governor of Minnesota, but local history also remembers an earlier William Ramsey, who settled along Ramsey Creek. That overlap gives the place name a local beginning and a later political association.

Ramsey was incorporated on May 4, 1864, and reincorporated in 1877. The Illinois Central Railroad, completed through the area on January 1, 1855, made the village a trading and shipping point for nearby townships; its traffic helped the community's businesses grow. Abraham Lincoln was known to travel through the Monclovia area near Ramsey on trips between Springfield and Vandalia, then Illinois's capital. Today Route 51 carries the regional traffic that rail once handled, while the village remains part of Fayette County's network of communities around Vandalia.
