Ramsey, IN

Ramsey is a census-designated place in Jackson Township, Harrison County, where the old railroad layout still gives the community its shape. Howard Ramsey platted the place on March 14, 1883, calling it Jackson City and placing it alongside the Louisville, Evansville and St. Louis Railroad. The name changed to Ramsey, but the original connection to the tracks remains part of the local story. Roads through southern Indiana connect the community to Harrison County and the Louisville-area region.

North Harrison High School is Ramsey’s most recognizable institution and brings students into the settlement from the surrounding countryside. The school sits within a place that began as a planned rail stop, with lots and streets laid out around movement of people, mail, and freight. Today, Ramsey is unincorporated and smaller than the railroad town its founders imagined, but the townsite retains a clear name, a school center, and a location within the rolling country of Harrison County. Its history is easy to follow from Jackson City to Ramsey, from rail line to road network.
