Ranier, MN

Ranier sits at the meeting of the Rainy River and Rainy Lake in northern Minnesota, east of International Falls on State Highway 11. Fort Frances, Ontario, lies directly across the river, so the city’s map is shaped by an international border as much as by its Koochiching County setting. The 2020 census counted 569 residents. A single-track lift bridge carries the Canadian National Railway across the Rainy River, and Ranier serves as a rail port of entry into Canada.

The bridge was built in 1908, the same year Ranier incorporated, and it remains the city’s defining piece of infrastructure. Water, rail, and the highway all meet here: boats use the riverfront, trains cross toward Ontario, and travelers follow the road east and west through the Northland. Ranier began as a pioneer settlement and grew around that border position, with the river separating two countries while also creating a shared regional corridor. The city is small, but its relationship to Fort Frances, Rainy Lake, the railway, and the crossing gives it an unusually large geographic role.
