Ransom Canyon, TX

Ransom Canyon sits inside Yellow House Canyon at the eastern edge of the Llano Estacado, about twelve miles east of Lubbock. The 2020 census counted 1,189 residents. Here, the landscape does most of the introducing: the town occupies the canyon cut by the North Fork of the Double Mountain Fork of the Brazos River, a sharp break in the broad, high plain that surrounds it. The canyon is the town’s first landmark, and every road seems to negotiate its edge.

Water has shaped the place in a very literal way. The stream has been dammed more than once, creating Buffalo Springs Lake and Lake Ransom Canyon, so canyon walls and reservoir water share the same view. Ransom Canyon is served by the Roosevelt and Slaton independent school districts, and its ties to the Lubbock area keep it connected to the larger South Plains. The town feels distinct because its setting is so specific. It is a settlement fitted into a named canyon, with the river corridor and lakes defining the view.
