Ransomville, NY

Ransomville is a hamlet in the Town of Porter, tucked into northern Niagara County between Lake Ontario, Youngstown, Wilson, and the roads leading toward Niagara Falls. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls region, but the local map is still agricultural: farms, ridge roads, and the Youngstown–Lockport Road frame the community. The Ransom and Curtiss families established the settlement in the nineteenth century, and the name comes from William Henry Harrison Ransom. Early businesses included log taverns, while the Curtiss family later built a large poultry operation that became one of the area’s notable enterprises.

Ransomville never became an incorporated village, so its identity comes through the town, the school, the volunteer fire company, and the businesses that line the hamlet’s roads. The Ransomville Volunteer Fire Company began in 1924 and still serves local schools, public buildings, and farms, a century-old institution with a very current job. Early settlers cut roads toward Youngstown and Lake Ontario, and a railroad arrived in the late nineteenth century; those connections help show why a small farming hamlet grew into a recognizable stop in the Niagara countryside. Today, Ransomville sits in the overlap between rural work and Buffalo-area access, with a strong sense of local scale even when the metro is close.
