About Raymond

Raymond is one of Hinds County's two county seats and the home of Hinds Community College's main campus. The 2020 census counted 1,960 residents. Commissioners selected the site near the center of Hinds County in 1828, and the legislature moved the courts and records there in 1829. That origin still shows up in the courthouse square and the town's old homes, churches, and streets. Raymond is a county-government town first, with a college campus woven into the same small footprint.

Hinds Community College began in Raymond in 1917 as an agricultural high school, and the campus now brings classrooms, residence halls, career programs, and student traditions into the town. The historic side is substantial too: the 1857-59 Hinds County Courthouse, Civil War sites, and St. Mark's Episcopal Church all sit within the broader local story. Downtown shops and restaurants still face the square. Raymond makes sense when you put those pieces together—county records, college life, and Mississippi history share the same road grid.
