Red Feather Lakes, CO

Tucked away in the mountains about an hour northwest of Fort Collins, Red Feather Lakes is a quiet, forested haven surrounded by the Roosevelt National Forest. At over 8,000 feet in elevation, the village is dotted with scenic lakes, towering pines, and dirt roads winding through peaceful cabin neighborhoods. It has long been a popular getaway for Front Range locals, but more people are choosing to settle here full-time for the clean air, abundant wildlife, and slower pace of life.

Daily life up here revolves around the outdoors and a healthy dose of self-reliance. Residents spend their free time hiking nearby trails, fishing, and watching moose wander past their porches. In the village center, a handful of rustic general stores, local cafes, a hardware shop, and a community library cover the everyday essentials. High-elevation living comes with snowy winter drives and regular trips down the mountain for major shopping, but locals gladly trade city conveniences for fresh pine air and a close-knit neighborhood.
