Red River, NM

Red River is a Taos County mountain town in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, built along the river at the base of the Red River Ski Area. Long before the resort years, the area was used by Ute and Jicarilla Apache people; later, miners and trappers came in after gold, silver, and copper. The old boomtown, first known as River City, filled with saloons, boarding houses, a sawmill, newspapers, and mine workings. When mining faded, homesteaders and visitors took over the cabins and gave the town a second life.

You can still read both eras in Red River. The Little Red Schoolhouse Museum and historic cabins hold onto the mining-and-settlement years, while ski runs, trout water, the Enchanted Circle Scenic Byway, and summer festivals keep the town moving through the calendar. Red River sits at 8,750 feet, so the mountain setting is not decoration—it controls the roads, weather, jobs, and seasons. The town’s character comes from that switch from mining camp to year-round mountain base, with the river and the old main street tying the two chapters together.
