About Redfield
Redfield is Spink County’s seat, a South Dakota city whose early map was shaped by railroad rivalry. The first post office opened in 1879 as Stennett Junction, the Redfield name arrived in 1881 for railroad official J. B. Redfield, and the town won the county seat in 1886 after six years of political and legal fighting among Spink County towns. Two Chicago and North Western lines and the Milwaukee Road later made Redfield a regional rail center. Redfield is a prairie county seat whose name and courthouse position were both settled by the railroad era.
