About Redway

Redway is an unincorporated CDP in southern Humboldt County, set on a plateau above the South Fork Eel River just off US 101. Oscar and Charles Burris laid out the community in 1923 as a resort-style golf course, and the old plan still peeks through the street grid. The Redwood Highway brought the South Fork valley into the automobile era, while Humboldt Redwoods State Park keeps the surrounding redwood country close at hand. The 2020 census counted 1,247 residents. Redway's public infrastructure has a clear local story.

Redway Community Services District formed in 1965 from a private water system and later absorbed the former sanitary district; it now handles water and wastewater, drawing from an infiltration gallery on the South Fork Eel. Redway Elementary serves kindergarten through sixth grade, and Eel River Conservation Camp crews work on fires, floods, conservation projects, and community services. That combination gives Redway the shape of a small South Fork hub: highway access, school, utilities, and redwood-country work all meeting on the river's edge.
