Remsen, IA

Remsen is a Plymouth County city in northwest Iowa's Deep Creek Valley. The 2020 census counted 1,678 residents. The Iowa Falls and Sioux City Railroad Town Land and Lot Company platted the community in 1876, and Remsen incorporated in 1889. The city took its name from Dr. William Remsen Smith, a Sioux City physician and landowner. Farmsteads and acreages still surround the city, while the older German and Luxembourg immigrant heritage remains part of the local story.

Remsen has also had to rebuild its center before. On July 4, 1936, a fire destroyed 15 homes and 18 buildings containing 38 businesses, but the city recovered and kept its commercial and civic role. Remsen-Union schools, now operating through the MMCRU arrangement, serve the public-school network, while Remsen St. Mary's has provided Catholic education since 1887 and now covers preschool through grade 12. The city promotes recreation, events, and local businesses through its chamber and municipal calendar. Remsen feels like a railroad-platted farm city with an established school network and a downtown memory shaped by both catastrophe and persistence.
