Rennerdale, PA

Rennerdale is an unincorporated census-designated place in Collier Township, about nine miles southwest of Pittsburgh. It is built on a south-facing hill that drops from roughly 1,032 feet to 882 feet toward Robinson's Run, which flows east toward Chartiers Creek and the Ohio River. That slope and creek valley give the neighborhood its physical shape. Coal mining began around 1870, and Collier's history ties Rennerdale and nearby communities to rail corridors that carried coal, limestone, and passengers through the surrounding hills.

The name comes from John B. Renner, a Pennsylvania Railroad comptroller who hoped to make Rennerdale a railroad town in the late 1800s. The railway plan never cut through the middle of the neighborhood, yet the proposal captures the transportation role that shaped its early growth. Rennerdale is in the Chartiers Valley School District, whose schools serve communities southwest of Pittsburgh. Collier Township now connects the neighborhood to township parks and the Panhandle Trail system, while its pond, volunteer fire department, and quarry area remain recognizable local landmarks. Collier also identifies Rennerdale with the first formal observance of Flag Day.
