Republic, PA

On Fayette County’s western side, Republic occupies the edge of Redstone Township where Pennsylvania Route 166 follows the local road network toward Brownsville and Edenborn. Dunlap Creek separates the census-designated place from Luzerne Township to the west, and the Mon–Fayette Expressway is about three miles north. Those connections put the community between a river crossing, a highway corridor, and the former mine patches that spread across the surrounding hills.

Coal and coke made Republic a company town in the early twentieth century. Republic Steel opened a major mine in 1905, built about one hundred houses for miners and their families, and employed as many as 600 men on a 1,300-acre property during full production. Bee-hive coke ovens followed in 1913 and 1914 to supply the mine and Youngstown steel works. Mine communities such as Thompson #1, Tower Hill #2, Allison #2, and Ralph formed the surrounding patchwork. Italian, Slovak, Polish, Czech, Croatian, Hungarian, and other immigrant families built churches, stores, schools, and parish networks around that work. Republic’s map still makes the most sense through Route 166, Dunlap Creek, and those industrial names.
