Resaca, GA

Resaca sits along the Oostanaula River in Gordon County, with unincorporated stretches reaching into Whitfield County. The railroad town began as Dublin in 1848, became Resacca in 1854, and shortened the spelling in 1871. Its best-known chapter came during the 1864 Battle of Resaca, one of the first major fights of the Atlanta Campaign. The Confederate cemetery, dedicated in 1866, holds more than 450 soldiers, while the preserved battlefield keeps earthworks and farm country in the same view. Resaca also has an unusual present-day landmark: the Monastery of the Glorious Ascension, an Orthodox community near I-75. It is a river town where railroad names, Civil War ground, and a monastery all meet.
