Richfield, MN

Richfield fits a full park system, a regional nature center, and major transportation corridors into 6.78 square miles immediately south of Minneapolis. Edina lies to the west, Bloomington to the south, and Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport and Fort Snelling along the eastern side. Within that compact area, the city's 23 parks account for 450 acres and include natural areas, walking and bicycle paths, athletic facilities, playgrounds, and open fields. Separate recreation facilities include an outdoor pool, ice arena, community center, and Wood Lake Nature Center. Wood Lake preserves 150 acres of cattail marsh, lowland forest, and restored prairie. More than two miles of accessible crushed-limestone trails pass a floating boardwalk, viewing docks, amphitheaters, a nature-play area, and a picnic shelter; in winter, staff groom routes for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

A major change is visible in 2026: the former nature-center building is closed for replacement, but trails remain open and many camps and programs continue on site or in other city parks. The city schedules the new building to open in fall 2026. Weekly public routines extend to Veterans Memorial Park, where the Richfield Farmers Market is marking its 37th year in 2026. It runs Saturday mornings from May through October, and participating vendors grow what they sell within 85 miles of Richfield. The METRO D Line provides a north-south connection beyond the city. The 18-mile bus rapid transit route links Richfield with Bloomington, Minneapolis, and Brooklyn Center every 10 to 15 minutes, seven days a week.
