Richmond, VT

Richmond is the main village and census-designated place in the town of Richmond, Vermont, where the Winooski River cuts through the north-central settlement. The 2020 census counted 853 residents in the CDP. The town was formed in 1794 from pieces of Williston, Jericho, and Huntington, after early settlement attempts in the Revolutionary era gave way to a permanent community. The river, U.S. Route 2, Interstate 89, and the New England Central Railway all cross the same broader town, so Richmond's old agricultural setting has long doubled as a transportation corridor.

The village center gathers the pieces people recognize: Main Street, Bridge Street, municipal offices, library, post office, schools, Volunteers Green, and the Round Church. Built in 1813, the 16-sided meetinghouse is a National Historic Landmark and gives Richmond an unusually distinctive civic landmark. Mount Mansfield Union High School in Jericho and Camel's Hump Middle School serve the local school map, while the Winooski and Huntington rivers shape the lower valley. Richmond is a Vermont crossroads with a village at its center and a river doing the work of a town line.
