Richmondville, NY

The village of Richmondville sits in the center of the larger Town of Richmondville in western Schoharie County. The town began around Warnerville in the 1760s and took its name from an early post office honoring John Richmond. Its most striking historical detail is the Battle of Cobleskill: despite the name, the May 1778 Revolutionary War fight took place around Warnerville, within present-day Richmondville. The village was incorporated in 1881 after mills and small factories had already gathered along the valley.

Richmondville's older working map follows water, mills, and transportation. Cobleskill Creek runs through the valley floor, hills rise toward the southeast, and the D&H Railroad helped connect the community to markets before Interstate 88 crossed the town. The village's power and light department, fire department, and public works keep the center functioning, while the surrounding town includes hamlets such as Warnerville, West Richmondville, and Bear Gulch. Richmondville's local clue is the split geography: a compact village at the middle of a town of hills, creeks, and old farm roads.
