Rifton, NY

Rifton is an Ulster County hamlet and census-designated place along Route 213 near the western edge of Esopus. The Wallkill River and Swartekill Creek give the community its basic shape, while older names such as Dashville, Arnoldton, Rifton Glen, and Swartekill mark the several settlements that grew together here. Mills operated along the Wallkill by the 1820s, and powder mills appeared by 1865. That industrial history makes the river feel like the town's original main street, carrying work, people, and goods through the valley.

Woodcrest Bruderhof gives present-day Rifton its most distinctive institution. The communal Christian community has been in Rifton since 1953 and is part of a wider Bruderhof network, with shared work, worship, education, and family life. The Esopus Historical Society keeps the area's older mill and industrial history in view, while Route 213 carries residents toward Kingston and the Hudson Valley. Rifton is served by Kingston City School District, and its roads still connect a handful of former hamlets along the Wallkill. It is a small place with a layered map: mills, river bends, a communal settlement, and a school district reaching beyond the CDP.
