Ripley, NY

Ripley is Chautauqua County's westernmost town, a Lake Erie community of 2,310 residents in the 2020 census. It was settled around 1804 and organized in 1817, then named for Eleazer Wheelock Ripley, a War of 1812 general. There is no incorporated village inside the town; the hamlet of Ripley is its only census-designated place. The New York State Thruway ends here, while U.S. 20, New York 5, and New York 76 tie the lakeshore town to the rest of western New York.

Ripley's local economy reads like a long strip of lake country: grape farms and other agriculture, wineries, small restaurants, golf, camping, and antique shops along the old Route 20 corridor. Lake Erie moderates the climate, and the town's soils support vineyards that have made western Chautauqua a recognizable wine district. Town offices and the hamlet sit among fields instead of behind a dense downtown. Ripley is a border-of-the-map kind of place, where a highway ends, the lake sets the horizon, and farming and wine give the roads their rhythm.
