Rising Sun, IN

Rising Sun is Ohio County's seat on the Indiana bank of the Ohio River and the county's only incorporated community. The 2020 census counted 2,248 residents. John James registered the town in 1816, and the river soon made it a busy landing: hundreds of flatboats could leave in a spring day carrying local goods downstream. The courthouse, built in 1845 and still in continuous use, gives the center a strong civic marker. River traffic faded as rail expansion failed to reach town, but Rising Sun kept its county offices, businesses, historic blocks, and river-facing streets.

The Ohio County Historical Museum holds the Whitlock family's inventions and hydroplane story, while the Rising Sun Community School Corporation and Ohio County Public Library serve the local map. State Road 56 brings inland traffic through town, and the river remains the eastern edge of the city. Rising Sun's local scoop is a county seat with a flatboat past, an old courthouse, and a small-town center that still reads from the water inward.
