Risingsun, OH

Risingsun is a Wood County village in Montgomery Township with a name that has changed along with its early history: the county lists St. Elms and Coontown as earlier names and records the village's founding in 1879. The first settlement came in the 1830s, the village was platted in 1876, and a post office opened in 1873; the spelling became Risingsun in 1894. Today, the village's Main Street town hall gives those nineteenth-century dates a present-day address.

Town Hall at 420 Main Street is where village council meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month. An elected mayor and six-member council direct the village, whose services include police and fire protection, street and state-highway maintenance, street lighting, and a park. The village office is open Tuesday through Thursday, with morning and afternoon hours. Risingsun is a compact Wood County place whose current structure is easy to see: a Main Street hall, regular council meetings, and the practical departments that keep a small village running.
