River Ridge is a quiet, leafy suburb stretched along the East Bank of the Mississippi River, bordered by Harahan to the east and Kenner to the west. Life here largely revolves around Jefferson Highway, a three-mile corridor lined with mom-and-pop restaurants, local bakeries, service shops, and neighborhood grocery stores. Because River Ridge is an unincorporated community without its own city hall, Jefferson Parish oversees all local amenities, from emergency services to the public library. The neighborhood's distinctive layout dates back to early French riverfront plantations, which were measured in narrow strips running deep inland from the levee. As those agricultural tracts gave way to suburban developments during the postwar boom, the historic property lines shaped the long, shaded residential streets found throughout the area. Today, the housing stock consists mostly of sturdy mid-century ranch homes, traditional single-family builds, and updated properties on generous lots under canopies of mature live oaks. River Ridge officially adopted its name in the 1970s, and it has maintained a reputation as a stable, family-oriented enclave where residents often stay for decades.

The paved path atop the Mississippi River levee is a daily destination for joggers, dog walkers, and sunset views over the water. Little Farms Playground serves as a central hub for youth sports, tennis, and parish programs; local ballfields gained nationwide fame in 2019 when the Eastbank Little League team brought home Louisiana's first Little League World Series title. Nearby, the modern River Ridge Library provides study spaces, children's programs, and community meeting rooms. When shopping for a home, keep in mind that living near the river means doing standard local homework: check property flood zones, budget for flood insurance, look into drainage on specific streets, and test the Jefferson Highway traffic during weekday rush hours.
