Rock Creek, OH

Rock Creek occupies the meeting point of Rock Creek and the Grand River in Morgan Township, Ashtabula County. The village had 667 residents in the 2020 census and sits within the Ashtabula micropolitan area, about 45 miles northeast of Cleveland. Water and roads have organized the settlement since it was settled in 1798, township government followed in 1819, and the village incorporated on April 5, 1849. The river junction gives the community a clear geographic center even as the surrounding township remains rural.

A covered bridge built over Rock Creek in 1832 served the village until it was replaced in 1948, and the old crossing remains part of local memory. The present village hall grew from a log-cabin town hall built in 1968; a new village hall opened in 1992. Jefferson Area Local Schools keeps education tied to the community through Rock Creek Elementary, the descendant of a school tradition that began with an 1869 building and changed after the last local high-school class in 1962. Five churches, village businesses, and a community center round out the local map, so Rock Creek’s civic life is concentrated in a few institutions along the creek and its roads.
