Rock Hall, MD

Rock Hall is a Kent County waterfront town on Maryland's upper Eastern Shore, reached along the National Chesapeake Scenic Byway. The 2020 census counted 1,198 residents. Settled in 1706 and incorporated in 1908, it grew from a harbor town into one of the Eastern Shore's watermen communities. Rock Hall Harbor still has commercial watermen, charter fishing boats, and sailing vessels, while Main Street carries the shops and restaurants that serve locals and visitors. The town's working waterfront is the point: oysters, crabs, fishing, and boats are part of the economy as well as the scenery.

Rock Hall's connection to Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge gives the harbor a wider landscape. The 2,285-acre refuge sits at the confluence of the Chester River and Chesapeake Bay and has trails, a boat ramp, marshes, forests, and shoreline habitat for migrating birds. Rock Hall Elementary School sits in town, and the town calendar includes races, music, and seasonal events. If you come in from the byway, the sequence makes sense: Main Street, the harbor, then the road south toward Eastern Neck, where the working Chesapeake opens into a much larger piece of shore.
