Rockford, OH

Rockford is Mercer County's oldest village, set on the high bank of the St. Marys River near the western Ohio line, about twelve miles northwest of Celina. French-Ottawa trader Anthony Madore established a trading post here, and Anthony Shane later laid out Shanesville in 1820. The settlement became Shane's Crossing before the post office adopted Rockford in 1890. Long before those names, the riverbank served as a travel route and a village site for Native peoples, with trails linking the Great Lakes and the Ohio River country.

State Routes 33 and 118 now carry the traffic that once followed the river and the Piqua-Fort Wayne Trail. Rockford's downtown, Carnegie library, historical museum, and businesses sit close to the water, while farm roads spread into the surrounding Mercer County fields. The village also connects west toward Fort Wayne and south toward Celina, making it a practical stop on the county road map. Rockford has grown from a river crossing into a small agricultural village without losing the old Shanesville story beneath its present streets.
