Rockwood, PA

Rockwood is a Somerset County borough of 850 people at the 2020 census, set north of Mount Davis and along the Casselman River. The borough sits near the west-side crest of the Eastern Continental Divide, where the Potomac and Mississippi drainage systems separate. That geography helps account for its older importance: Rockwood grew around crossings, roads, and rail lines moving through the Cumberland landscape.

Names tell the settlement's story. It began as Shaff's Bridge, became Mineral Point, and took the name Rockwood as the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad era took hold. A railroad depot arrived in 1871, and the B&O and Somerset & Cambria lines made the town a local rail junction. Today Rockwood Area School District includes Rockwood Area Elementary and Rockwood Area Junior/Senior High, both along the borough's Milford Township boundary. The town's current map is smaller than its old transportation role, but the Casselman, the rail corridor, and the succession of names still show why Rockwood sits where it does.
