About Rocky Point
Rocky Point is a Pender County census-designated place north of Castle Hayne and inside the Wilmington metropolitan area. The 2020 census counted 1,476 residents. Interstate 40’s Exit 408, U.S. 117, and North Carolina 210 and 133 meet around the community, sending traffic toward Wilmington, Burgaw, the coast, and inland Pender County. Rocky Point Elementary, Cape Fear Middle, and Heide Trask High operate within Pender County Schools, so school traffic is part of the same road network as freight and commuters.
Rocky Point has been a stop on important lines through southern Pender County for a long time. County history ties the area to the movement of timber, naval stores, and farm products, and the highway plan still describes the junction as a place where through traffic meets school buses and local errands. That is the local scoop: it is rural Pender, but the intersections support stores and services for the surrounding communities. Pines, fields, scattered homes, and the route toward the Cape Fear coast fill in the spaces between roads.
