About Rocky Top

Rocky Top is an Anderson-and-Campbell County city with three names in its recent map history: Coal Creek, Lake City, and Rocky Top. Coal Creek’s mining past includes the 1891 Coal Creek War, when miners resisted the use of unpaid convict labor. After Norris Dam created Norris Lake, the city adopted Lake City in 1936; in 2014 it changed the name again to Rocky Top. Norris Lake and Norris Dam State Park sit nearby, but the strongest local thread runs underground, through coal, labor, and the museum that keeps that story in town.
