Roopville, GA

Roopville is a small Carroll County town along U.S. Route 27, about 10 miles south of Carrollton and six miles north of Centralhatchee. Its story is wrapped around John K. Roop, who founded the town in 1881, donated land, and built the stores, mill, blacksmith shop, and homes that helped it take root. When the town was chartered in 1885, its limits were set as a 500-yard circle around the J. K. Roop House. That is an unusually intimate town boundary, and it still shows why the Roop family remains central to Roopville’s sense of place.

Today the Roop House and the town’s historic center keep that early layout visible. The former bank and post office houses the Roopville Archive and Historical Society, while old commercial buildings, churches, homes, and gathering spaces line the compact core. The Goat Rock milling site nearby reaches even farther back, connecting the town to an older landscape of waterpower and movement. The 2020 census counted 231 residents. Roopville is small enough for one family’s land, buildings, and civic work to remain legible across the whole map, which makes its history feel unusually close at hand.
