Roosevelt, NJ

Roosevelt is a western Monmouth County borough whose 2020 census counted 808 residents. It began as Jersey Homesteads, a New Deal settlement established in 1937 for Jewish garment workers, with farming, manufacturing, and retail organized as a cooperative project. The name changed to Roosevelt in 1945 after Franklin Roosevelt's death. That origin gives the borough an unusual built-in story: it was planned as a social experiment, not just a collection of streets that grew around a road. The Jersey Homesteads Historic District covers the whole borough, and the town's art history is unusually strong for a place this size.

Painter Ben Shahn and other artists settled here, and the Roosevelt Arts Project, concerts, string-band performances, and small-town events keep that creative thread active. Fields and wooded edges still wrap around the compact center.
