About Rosemount

A former wartime powder-plant site gives Rosemount an unusually large research landscape within a fast-growing Twin Cities suburb. The federal government cleared farms in May 1942 for the Gopher Ordnance Works, intended to make smokeless powder, but World War II ended as the initial facility was coming online. In 1947 and 1948, the government transferred about 7,686 acres to the University of Minnesota. The Rosemount Research and Outreach Center now supports work ranging from agriculture and environmental science to aerospace engineering on that land, while the city plans nearby development through its UMore area process. Rosemount's estimated population reached 30,581 in July 2024, 19.2 percent above its April 2020 population base of 25,650. Public recreation is spread across 30 city parks rather than concentrated in one center.

Central Park has a splash pad and amphitheater; Brockway Park has a disc-golf course; and Schwartz Pond Park combines a skate park with nature play. The Community Center and adjoining NHL-size ice arena host indoor activities, while the Steeple Center reuses a former church as an arts and event venue. Several projects were changing that network in 2026: the city expected to complete a downtown greenway connection to the Mississippi River Greenway by year-end, extend the Bonaire Path, and finish a permanent dog park at Amber Fields. Commuter transit centers on a 100-space park-and-ride across from City Hall at 145th Street and Burnley Avenue. The facility connects Rosemount to the Cedar Avenue transit corridor, express service toward downtown Minneapolis, and service toward St. Paul.
