Rosewood, OH

Rosewood is a Champaign County census-designated place in northwestern Adams Township, with 224 people at the 2020 census. The community sits along State Route 29, but its first organizing line was the railroad. Rosewood was laid out in 1893 when the Detroit, Toledo & Ironton Railroad reached the area, and a post office followed in 1894. The rail stop gave the settlement a reason to become a trading point between the surrounding farms and the county's larger towns.

Local history adds a useful business detail. John Birkhold moved into Rosewood in 1896, built a general store near the tracks, and became postmaster when the office opened the following year. The grocery, post office, and bank still occupy the same general Rosewood crossroads, keeping the old commercial arrangement visible. A 1909 series of robberies, including a break-in at the post office, also survives in the Champaign County Historical Museum's local record. Rosewood's story is a railroad village whose everyday landmarks stayed close to the original reason it was laid out.
