Ross, CA

Ross is a quiet, leafy enclave in Marin County’s Ross Valley, located between San Anselmo and Kentfield with Mount Tamalpais rising to the west. It is almost entirely residential, celebrated for its historic estates, private lanes, and dense canopy of mature trees. The town's commercial footprint is small, centered around a compact cluster of civic buildings and neighborhood spots along Sir Francis Drake Boulevard and Lagunitas Road. For supermarket runs, retail shopping, or a wider selection of restaurants, locals make the quick drive to neighboring Larkspur, San Anselmo, or San Rafael.

Ross Common serves as the heart of the community. This broad green park sits right beside Town Hall, the top-rated K-8 Ross School, and the local post office. Ross does not have residential home mail delivery, so walking to the post office to collect letters is a built-in household ritual and an easy way to bump into neighbors. A short stroll away, the Marin Art and Garden Center provides eleven acres of tranquil grounds, complete with botanical gardens, art workshops, summer lawn concerts, and community theater productions from the Ross Valley Players.

The flat streets around the town center are great for walking and cycling, though you will still want a car for regional commutes and daily errands, particularly during busy travel hours on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard. Heading west on Lagunitas Road brings you directly to Natalie Coffin Greene Park, the primary gateway for hiking and trail running around Phoenix Lake and the watershed. Living in such lush natural scenery also means keeping practical realities in mind. Properties in low-lying areas near local creeks can face winter storm flooding, while hillside homes in the wooded canyons require careful attention to wildfire safety, insurance coverage, and narrow access roads.
