Roundup, MT

Roundup is Musselshell County's seat, a city of 1,742 people in the 2020 census that grew beside the river and the cattle routes of central Montana. The name comes from the cattle roundups held along the Musselshell, and the town became a trailhead for the Great Montana Centennial Cattle Drive. Annual cattle drives keep that connection alive, while U.S. Routes 12 and 87 carry the modern road traffic through the city. Roundup incorporated in 1909 and still uses a commissioner-executive form of city government.

The Musselshell Valley Historical Museum is the place to go when the local story gets bigger than cattle. Its buildings and collections cover early settlement, ranching, railroads, and the coal boom that followed the Milwaukee Road. A coal exhibit funded largely by Signal Peak Energy brings the county's later industry into the same conversation. The river on the city's southern edge offers brown trout, smallmouth bass, and catfish, and Roundup School District serves students from kindergarten through 12th grade; the high school's Panthers are part of the town's everyday rhythm. Roundup is a county seat with a working landscape: cattle, coal, crops, river water, and roads all meet here.
