Royalton, IL

Royalton is a Franklin County village in southern Illinois, on land once crossed by the Lusk's Ferry Road. That early route connected Fort Kaskaskia with Lusk's Ferry on the Ohio River and ran diagonally through the area. In the 1850s Isaac Snider opened a store on the Mount Vernon-Murphysboro Mail Road, established a post office called Osage, and laid out a 38-lot village in 1857. The village incorporated in 1907, and the 2020 census counted 1,068 residents.

Royalton grew with the roads, the post office, a drugstore, blacksmith shop, doctor, and telephone exchange, then took on the coal-country pattern of southern Franklin County. A second village laid out by Henry Pierce in 1904 was built north of a mine and named Pierce, adding another layer to the local map. Today Royalton remains a small village along the roads between the county's mining communities and larger service towns. Its older story is still a road story: ferry route first, mail road next, and a village grid built where those lines met.
