Rushford, MN

Rushford is a Fillmore County city in southeastern Minnesota’s Bluff Country, with 1,860 residents in the 2020 census. The Root River and Rush Creek meet near town, and the surrounding driftless landscape rises into wooded bluffs rather than flattening into prairie. Early pioneers pole-boated up the Root River, and the town took the Rushford name at a Christmas Day supper in 1854. The 1867 railroad depot still stands, now being restored as a local visitor center, keeping the rail-era story visible. Rushford Village surrounds Rushford on all sides, an unusual arrangement that makes the city boundary part of the local geography.

The Root River segment of the Blufflands State Trail runs through town along the former railroad grade, linking Rushford to other small communities across the valley. Rushford-Peterson schools serve the area, while the city’s five-year Homecoming brings former residents back for a reunion-style weekend. River access, bluff roads, trails, the depot, schools, and small businesses make up the daily map. Rushford is the kind of southeastern Minnesota place where the landscape does a lot of the talking: a compact river city inside a larger village boundary, with the old railroad grade turned into a path through the bluffs.
