Russell, MA

Tucked along the Westfield River in the foothills of the Berkshires, Russell offers a peaceful, scenic setting in western Hampden County. The community grew during the nineteenth century as paper mills and railroads sprouted along the river, creating small historic hamlets like Woronoco and Russell Village. Today, those industrial roots have given way to quiet residential neighborhoods framed by forested hills, granite ridges, and rushing water.

For newcomers looking for a rural feel without giving up convenience, Russell hits a great sweet spot. Russell Pond is a popular local spot for swimming and summer afternoons, while the surrounding hills offer easy access to hiking and fishing. Daily errands and dining are simple thanks to neighboring Westfield right down Route 20, and Springfield is close enough for a reasonable daily commute. It is a relaxed, friendly town with plenty of open space to call home.
