Sackets Harbor, NY

Sackets Harbor is a village in Jefferson County on Black River Bay, where the protected harbor opens onto Lake Ontario. The 2020 Census counted 1,351 residents. During the War of 1812, the harbor became the center of American shipbuilding and naval activity on the lake. Navy Point held the shipyard, and the village faced a major British-Canadian attack on May 29, 1813. The military story grew from geography: timber, a sheltered bay, and access to the Great Lakes made Sackets Harbor a strategic working waterfront.

The village still carries those layers through the Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site, Madison Barracks, and the Sackets Harbor Village Historic District, listed on the National Register in 1983. Sackets Harbor is also a New York State Heritage Area, with preserved nineteenth-century buildings around Main Street and the waterfront. Sackets Harbor Central School District provides the local school connection, while the harbor supports fishing, boating, and public events. The result is a compact lakeside village where a school, a historic street grid, and a former naval base share the same shoreline.
