Sahuarita, AZ

Sahuarita is a young municipality built across a much older inhabited landscape. The town incorporated in 1994, but Indigenous communities had long farmed along the Santa Cruz River with complex irrigation systems; Tohono O'odham oral history remains part of the town's account of the valley. The river crosses both sides of Sahuarita on its northward course toward Tucson, about 15 miles away. Growth has been rapid: the 2020 census recorded 34,134 residents, compared with 25,259 in 2010. One remnant of the region's more recent military history survives beside Interstate 19. The Titan Missile Museum preserves Complex 571-7, the only one of the 54 Titan II missile sites from the Cold War alert network that remains open to the public. Guided tours descend to the launch-control center and allow a view of the inert missile in its silo.

Anamax is the oldest and largest of Sahuarita's eight town parks, combining sports fields with playgrounds, dog areas, community gardens, a skate park, a splash pad, and an outdoor fitness court. At Sahuarita Lake Park, a walking path, public art, fishing in a regularly stocked lake, and the free Lakeside Live concert series share the same grounds. The 17,700-square-foot Sahuarita Library opened in September 2021 with a storytime room, gaming room, reading patios, private study rooms, a large meeting room, and the county library system's first outdoor performance space. It also offers a seed library and sits on Sun Shuttle Route 421. Its July 2026 schedule included one-on-one computer help, baby storytime, French conversation, meditation practice, and an exhibit by a local artist.
