Salem, AR (City)

Salem is Fulton County's seat in north-central Arkansas, where U.S. 62/412 and State Highway 9 meet near the county's center. The city grew around a public square first used for a log courthouse in 1844, and the square has carried county business through fires, rebuilding, and the current courthouse. Salem's early name was Pilot Hill; it became Salem officially in 1872 and was incorporated in 1900.

The county courthouse is still only one part of the local map. Salem's school campus lies east of town, Fulton County Hospital has served the area since 1963, and the Fulton County Fair and annual Homecoming keep countywide events tied to the seat. The surrounding county is hilly and heavily pasture-based, with beef cattle, poultry, and feed production shaping the wider economy. Salem works as the administrative and service center for that rural landscape, with the square, highways, school, hospital, and fair each carrying a different part of the county's civic and working life.
