Salem, NY

Salem sits in eastern Washington County against Vermont, with a town story that reaches back to 1761, when Joshua Conkey and James Turner settled here after passing through as soldiers. The town includes the Salem hamlet, once an incorporated village, and a countryside shaped by farms, old homes, and the Battenkill. That river runs along much of the southern boundary on its way from Vermont toward the Hudson, giving Salem a natural line as well as a working landscape.

Three covered bridges make the river especially legible. Rexleigh and Eagleville still carry traffic, while the former Shushan bridge holds a museum of farm equipment; all three are on the National Register. The Georgi on the Battenkill museum and garden, the historic courthouse, Salem Central School, farm stands, theaters, and Route 22 add more layers to the town’s day-to-day map. Salem feels connected to Glens Falls for metro life, to Vermont across the border, and to its own hamlets through the Battenkill crossings. It is the kind of Washington County town where water, agriculture, architecture, and local memory share the same few miles.
