Saltsburg, PA

Saltsburg began with salt. In the late 1790s, the Deemer family found salt in a well above the Conemaugh River, and local producers soon built an industry around wells, furnaces, and evaporation. The Pennsylvania Main Line Canal reached town in 1829, carrying salt and other goods between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia; the borough incorporated in 1838. Railroads replaced the canal before mid-century, but the river valley, canal basin, and old industrial streets kept the town’s shape.

Canal Park now preserves part of the old canal route and hosts Canal Days, while the Rebecca B. Hadden Stone House Museum holds the stories of salt drilling, glassmaking, boat building, and canal life. The West Penn Trail follows the former canal and railroad corridor toward the Conemaugh River, and the three waterways around town support paddling, fishing, and boating. Saltsburg remains an Indiana County borough with homes, shops, churches, local businesses, and road links toward Pittsburgh and Johnstown. Its past is still part of the walk to town.
