Saluda, VA

Saluda is a Middlesex County census-designated place and county seat on Virginia's Middle Peninsula, where U.S. 17 and Virginia 33 meet. The 2020 census counted 627 residents. The courthouse complex, county offices, churches, professional offices, small businesses, and homes cluster along General Puller Highway and Gloucester Road. County services and the routes toward Urbanna, Deltaville, the Rappahannock, and Piankatank rivers give this inland village a working connection to the Chesapeake shore.

Middlesex voters moved the county seat from Urbanna to Saluda in 1849, and the 1852 courthouse became the center of the village's historic district. The district includes about 65 parcels—commercial and government buildings, churches, schools, and houses—and Antioch Baptist Church carries an important African American history. The courthouse remains a visible civic address even as newer county offices handle present-day work. Saluda's calendar and services orbit the county government, while the wider county brings boating, oysters, fishing, and camping into everyday errands. It is a courthouse village on a rural highway, with the county's waterfront economy reached by road.
