Salyer, CA

Salyer is a Trinity County CDP on State Route 299 beside the Trinity River, near the county’s western edge. The highway is the practical backbone here: Trinity County’s transportation plan treats 299 as the route linking Salyer with the downriver communities, Weaverville, the North Coast, and the Redding side of the state. The road carries local trips, freight, and river-country travel through a long, wooded corridor.

The name on the map is only part of Salyer’s story. Miy-me’ is the Hupa-language name associated with the place, and the Tsnungwe people identify this stretch of the Trinity River country as part of their homeland. The Tsnungwe Council is based in Salyer, so that history is not sealed away in a plaque; it remains part of the community’s present identity. Salyer was established in 1918 and named for miner Charles Marshall Salyer.
