Salyersville, KY

Salyersville sits in the valley of the Licking River, where the watercourse, side forks, and steep hills give the Magoffin County seat its shape. The town grew from earlier settlements around Licking Station and Adamsville, then became the county seat when Magoffin County was formed in 1860. Government offices, local businesses, churches, schools, and the county historical society still concentrate the region's daily business here, drawing people in from hollows and ridges across the county.

Two eras meet around downtown. Pioneer Village preserves fifteen original log cabins and the craft traditions associated with early settlement, while Ramey Memorial Park brings people down to the river, across the steel bridge, and into present-day recreation. The Mountain Parkway, which reached Salyersville in the early 1960s, widened the town's connection to eastern Kentucky and the state's larger road network. Salyersville's character comes from that overlap: an Appalachian county seat with a working river, an old settlement story, and a civic center that still matters to the surrounding hills.
