San Andreas, CA

Tucked into the Sierra Nevada foothills, San Andreas serves as the laid-back county seat of Calaveras County. Home to around 3,000 residents, the town began as a Gold Rush mining camp in 1848 and still holds onto its rich frontier character. Today, it sits at the junction of Highway 49 and Highway 12, giving locals a quiet home base surrounded by rolling hills and oak woodlands.

Daily life here is practical and community-focused, with local schools, county offices, and the region's main hospital all close at hand. The historic center features 19th-century brick buildings and the Calaveras County Museum, while nearby lakes and foothill trails provide plenty of outdoor recreation. With quick drives to neighboring spots like Angels Camp and Mokelumne Hill, San Andreas offers a great mix of Gold Country history and easy small-town living.
