About San Ardo

San Ardo sits on the east side of Highway 101 where the Salinas Valley narrows between the Santa Lucia Mountains and the Coast Ranges. Meyer Brandenstein laid out the settlement on his San Bernardo ranch when the railroad arrived in 1887; the post office shifted from San Bernardo to San Ardo that same year. The town's working map still has three strong lines: agriculture along the valley, the Salinas River to the west, and the San Ardo Oil Field a few miles south. It is a small south-Monterey stop where farm rows, pumpjacks, and the highway share one frame.
