About San Miguel

San Miguel is a census-designated place in Dona Ana County at the junction of New Mexico Routes 28 and 192. The 2020 census counted 975 residents, and the community's post office uses ZIP Code 88058. San Miguel lies about 15 miles south of Las Cruces in the lower Rio Grande valley, where irrigated fields, desert edges, and long straight roads shape the view. The intersection gives the place a practical role: a small stop along a north-south route through southern New Mexico.

The older settlement is listed in county planning histories as dating to 1852, with the San Miguel post office established in 1952. That makes the current CDP part of a much older corridor even though its census designation is recent. Public schools are operated through Gadsden Independent School District, including North Valley Elementary; older students are assigned to Gadsden High School or Alta Vista Early College High School. San Miguel's story is therefore a blend of routes and institutions: NM 28, the 192 junction, a rural post office, and a school district that ties the small place to the broader Las Cruces area.
