San Pierre, IN

San Pierre is a Starke County census-designated place in Railroad Township, about six miles south of the Kankakee River and close to Jasper-Pulaski Fish and Wildlife Area. The community's agricultural setting opens into one of the best-known sandhill crane corridors in Indiana; thousands of cranes gather in the surrounding area during fall migration. The birds have become an unofficial emblem of San Pierre, appearing on local signs and giving the small place a seasonal moment when the fields and roads fill with visitors watching the sky.

San Pierre began as Culvertown, then gained a post office in 1853 under the name River Post Office. Tierney Park occupies the former site of Our Lady of Holy Cross Health Care Center and recalls John Tierney, who reportedly rode Abraham Lincoln's funeral train from San Pierre to Springfield. The local school opened in 1902, and one-room schools in Railroad Township later consolidated there. San Pierre is a northwestern Indiana crossroads with farm country, a park, a school history, and a fall migration that makes the Kankakee landscape part of the town's annual rhythm.
